The Board for Gene Technology’s New Virus Guidelines for Contained Use

The Board for Gene Technology has updated its guidelines on the classification and isolation measures for the contained use of genetically modified viruses. The new guidelines include clarified recommendations and requirements for the safe use of various genetically modified viruses, excluding plant viruses.

Key Content:

Risk Assessment: The classification of the use of genetically modified viruses is always based on a risk assessment conducted by the operator, taking into account the pathogenicity of the virus, genetic modifications, and the method of use.

Virus-Specific Guidelines: The guidelines provide recommendations on the classification and necessary isolation measures for the most common genetically modified viruses, such as adeno- and lentiviruses. New virus groups have also been included in the guidelines. For each virus, its general characteristics are described, as well as the isolation measures and safety practices required for contained use.

The new guidelines are available on the Board for Gene Technology's website. For further information, the secretariat of the Board for Gene Technology can be contacted.
